One of the most common misconceptions about forklifts is that a machine can lift its maximum rated capacity regardless of the load.
In reality, a forklift’s capacity depends on both the weight of the load and where that weight is positioned.
This distance is known as the load center, and it’s one of the most important specifications to understand when selecting a high-capacity forklift.
A load center is measured from the vertical face of the forks to the center of gravity of the load. As the load center increases, the leverage placed on the forklift also increases. That additional leverage reduces the amount of weight the forklift can safely lift.
For machinery movers and industrial rigging contractors, this is especially important because many loads are far from uniform.
CNC machining centers, transformers, generators, presses, tanks, and fabricated assemblies often have large footprints or offset centers of gravity. Even if the total weight falls within the forklift’s rated capacity, an extended load center may require a larger machine or a different attachment configuration.
That’s why experienced machinery movers don’t evaluate a forklift based solely on its maximum lifting capacity.
Instead, they consider:
• Total load weight
• Load dimensions
• Center of gravity
• Fork length
• Required lift height
• Attachment weight
• Operating environment
All of these factors influence the forklift’s actual lifting capability.
At Royal Rig-N-Lift, application engineering is a critical part of every equipment recommendation. Understanding exactly what our customers are lifting allows us to recommend a forklift that’s properly configured for the job—not simply one with the biggest number on the specification sheet.
Choosing the correct forklift improves safety, increases productivity, and helps protect valuable equipment throughout every move.
If you’re planning a machinery move or evaluating a high-capacity forklift, we’d be happy to discuss your application and help determine the right solution.
